Hacienda Monasterio is set in an estate of 160 hectares, of which 78 are planted with vineyards. It is located between Pesquera and Valbuena de Duero, two Duero valley towns famous for the quality of their wines.

OUR STATE

Located on a southern hillside, the estate covers 167 hectares, 108 of wich are planted with vines.

The heterogenous composition of the soils allows us to sub-divide the estate in plots, all of them with the same common denominator : a high concentration of limestone which gives our wines subtlety and elegance.

The main grape variety we cultivate is the Tinto Fino ( a copy of the Tempranillo variety, characterized by large clusters and high performance). The Tinto Fino planted in our vineyards are grapes taken from selected old vines from the region.

We also cultivate grape varieties of Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec, in lesser quantity, that were planted after we observed that only in exceptional years does the Tinto Fino reach optimal maturing conditions.

The rest of the time, french varieties are used to balance the strucuture.

In order to guarantee the harverst quality, Hacienda Monasterio has set up a dense plantation of 4.000 plants per hectare, much higher then the average 2.200 plants per hectare in the area. The low production we get, 3.500kg/Ha, allows us to extract the maximun essence from each plant, as the vine is not forced to produce big quantities of grapes.

The prunning method used is the double Guyot, which allows a constant regeneration of the plant and avoids premature ageing. This limited production promotes an earlier maturing, especially fundamental in our area, where the rains are important from the second half of the month of October.

The perfect southern direction, the nature of its soil and the natural drainage of the slopes create an ideal micro climate for wine production. Our quality wines are the result of such favorable Terroir.

organic viticulture

Organic viticulture focuses primarily on connecting with the environment, respecting the laws dictated by nature. Responsible agricultural practices are conducted without the use of herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilisers, and looking after the environment and its landscape. This way, the biological activity of soils is preserved and the vineyard is allowed to express all its potential, its features and its own identity.

To do this, we use completely natural products, such as extracts of plants like valerian, hypericum, yarrow, etc., seeking the self-sufficiency of vines, composting organic matter (stalks, marc, vine shoots ...), using plant coverings in search of a balance between plants and the environment.

All the crop residues (marc, remains from pruning, stalk, etc.) are composted together with sheep manure and used as fertilisers for our soils, thus returning to the soil what it has given us.

All the crop residues (marc, remains from pruning, stalk, etc.) are composted together with sheep manure and used as fertilisers for our soils, thus returning to the soil what it has given us.

Hacienda Monasterio cultivates organically, and this is certified by CAECIL (Consejo Agricultura Ecológica de Castilla y León).

We observe greater biological activity in our soils and greater resistance of our vineyards to pests and diseases.
The final result of this work shows a greater honesty and identity in the quality of the wines of Hacienda Monasterio.
